I Think I’m Meeting Someone

Host: “Hello (smiles). Welcome (open, engaging face). How many in your party?”

The guest darts her eyes and jerks her neck back and forth and lifts her chin up and down and dodges the direct line of the host’s gaze as if it were a bright light and looking back at it would cause her to loose her train of thought and derail her entire day.

Guest: “I think I’m meeting someone” she finally smears across the empty, quiet space between them. (still, looking everywhere but at the face in front of her).

You think you’re meeting someone? You think? Maybe? That could be the plan, but you’re not quite sure, yet?

I believe what you meant was:

The guest looks at the host because it is a human being who has just addressed her directly, after all.

Guest: “Hi. (returns eye contact, returns smile- *bonus points) I am meeting someone and I’m not sure if she’s here, yet”.

Ah, there we go. That can be figured out easily enough by simply taking a look around and thank you for co-existing.
